Tech Gadgets for the Elderly http://www.seemoremedia.com/tech-gadgets-for-the-elderly Mon, 08 Jul 2013 09:41:40 +0000 http://www.seemoremedia.com/?p=386 ElderlyIt used to be that it was the youngsters who were addicted to tech gadgets.  But now, thanks to Iggy Fanlo, this is about to change.  Co-founder of Lively – a wireless technology for the elderly and their caregivers – Fanlo points out that tech gadgets are now set to become a key item in the lives of seniors too.  Rather than learning how to benefit from an iPhone, seniors can take advantage from in-home monitoring sensors; accessing medical treatment from home and all sorts of other things to make living at home much more manageable.

Developing tech gadgets for the elderly is also likely to be quite a fruitful business.  According to director for the Center for Technology and Aging, David Lindeman, developing these useful devices for the elderly he believes “will have the broadest and longest-lasting social impact.”  Indeed, within less than two decades, a fifth of the American population will be 65 and older.  More will live longer and more independently in their summer years than any time to date.  In addition, given that the national average age of nursing home entrance is closer to 90 these days than 80, tech gadgets to be used at home are becoming increasingly attractive.  The more such tech gadgets that are created to help seniors, the easier life will be on their caregivers.

With Lively, one’s movements can be tracked using wireless sensors that are placed throughout the house – pill box, bathroom door etc. – so that if someone is in the bathroom too long or not taking enough medication, it is tracked and reported.  Basically one’s regular routine is determined and then if something seems out-of-the-ordinary – it is tracked and family /caregivers is alerted.  Such tech gadgets are a huge relief to those who felt trapped in the home caring for someone and for the person being cared for to re-develop their independence.

Samsung Focus Flash http://www.seemoremedia.com/samsung-focus-flash Tue, 22 Nov 2011 09:23:49 +0000 http://www.seemoremedia.com/samsung-focus-flash

After all the hype of the iPhone, PC makers tried to come up with a competitor.  It seemed that it was unsuccessful.  The first Windows Phone just didn’t really do it for the consumer.  But now – with the launch of the Samsung Focus Flash – all that might be about to change and there could actually be some real competition to the iPhone that keeps on increasing in popularity. Let’s have a look at what it can do.

Well, first off, it runs way better on the second generation of WP handsets.  Second, financially it makes a lot of sense as for what it gives out, the price is great.  It also feels good in your hand (not as slim-line as the iPhone line but way less chunky than its predecessor).  It boasts an attractive 3.7 inch vibrant screen with a front-facing camera.  The software comes with an Internet sharing on/off setting.  And the quality of the call is pretty impressive too.

It’s not all perfect though and it seems it has a few issues that still need to be ironed out.    Its touch actions require more accuracy and at times its screen does not register quickly enough. Typing on it can be tough as it is very narrow.  And the camera isn’t exactly anything to shout about vis-à-vis quality.

But having said all of that, for those looking for a relatively top technological phone with all the bells and whistles at a fraction of the price, the Samsung Focus Flash isn’t a bad choice.

See More Media Genetically Modifying Trees? http://www.seemoremedia.com/see-more-media-genetically-modifying-trees Sun, 12 Dec 2010 16:17:30 +0000 http://www.seemoremedia.com/?p=71 An American organization called the Institute of Forest Biotechnology has started a great number of discussions regarding genetically modified trees. By altering the trees’ DNA patterns, people will be able to create trees that are stronger, more fruitful, and more resistant to diseases, insects and changes in climate. Members of the organization believe that the modification of trees could lead to better, stronger lumber and alternative fuel sources, as well as aid the environment in general, as trees absorb carbon and provide habitats for wildlife.

Steven Strauss, a professor of forest biotechnology at Oregon State University, stated that “biotech trees, in my view, are a very powerful tool. It’s something that we’d like to have available, but it’s something that we’d like to use properly.”
Other environmentalist organizations have a more cautious approach to the idea. “We think there’s been a tendency to introduce these things before they have actually identified all the potential problems,” said John Bennet, the executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada.
